Sony Music/RCA Records drops R. Kelly from roster

The Surviving R. Kelly documentary continues to have ramifications for R&B icon R. Kelly. After the six-part Lifetime docuseries reignited scrutiny of the singer’s past sexual misconduct and sparked movements such as the #MuteRKelly petition, RCA Records announced Friday they are severing their working relationship with the 52-year-old “Ignition” and “I Believe I Can Fly” singer. According to Variety, Kelly was “removed from the RCA Records website, which lists the label’s signed artists, shortly after 10 a.m. PT on Friday, Jan. 18.”

Although Kelly was was charged with 21 counts of child pornography in 2002 derived from a videotape which prosecutors purported as evidence of him having sex with a 14-year-old girl, Kelly was acquitted of all charges in 2008 when the young woman in question refused to testify.

Kelly’s back catalog, including his last album, a Christmas-themed compilation from 2016, will remain with RCA/Sony.
