‘Game of Thrones’ star Kit Harrington: “When will a Marvel movie feature a gay actor?”

Marvel Cinematic Universe fans might be buzzing about upcoming Captain Marvel, the studio’s first female-centric film in its 25 year history — but Game of Thrones star Kit Harrington wondered about another demographic with a glaring lack of representation during his visit to the Variety Studio at the Toronto Film Festival this past weekend.

“That we can’t have someone in a Marvel movie who’s gay in real life and plays some super hero,” he said. “I mean, when is that going to happen? There’s a big problem with masculinity and homosexuality that they can’t somehow go hand in hand.”

Although small steps have been made with characters like Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Yukio and Shatterstar in Deadpool 2 (Deadpool himself being a pansexual, according to Ryan Reynolds) — more well-known figures like Iceman from the X-Men series have remained heterosexual despite being openly gay in the Marvel Comics universe. Of course, Ian McKellen (an openly gay man) played Magneto in the X-Men films, Lee Pace (openly gay) played Ronan in Guardians of the Galaxy and Tessa Thompson (openly bi) played Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok — so it’s not as if gay actors are completely nonexistent in the MCU.

Harrington was joined by The Death and Life of John F. Donovan co-star Thandie Newton, who brought up the sports world and her appreciation for more and more athletes coming out; she added: “It is changing, but we have to get behind those changes and keep pushing it.”

Do you think the Marvel Cinematic Universe needs to expand its representation and feature more gay characters? Let us know in the comments.
